BARBIE

"HAVE YOU BEEN TO A BARBIE?"

One of the most important bits of slang you could learn is the word barbie (sometimes spelt barby).

This refers to that famous Australian icon, the barbecue (also spelt barbeque).

You can find barbies everywhere in Australia. At the beach. In national parks. On campus. In people’s backyards.

The word barbie can refer to the gathering of people, or to the device used for cooking the meat.

We usually say, “I am going to a barbecue.” NOT “I am going to a barbecue party.”If you haven’t been to a barbie, then you haven’t really been to Australia!
